Google Goggles: A picture is now worth a thousand words and searches

Have you ever been in a situation where you don’t seem to get the right words to speak? It happens when you are about to do a search on Google. Sometimes, you are just not able to word your searches well enough to allow Google to fetch you your information.

Google Goggles, brings in a unique feature to Google’s already growing suite of applications. It will now enable an application on Google’s Android phones and will allow you to conduct searches using images taken from your mobile phone.

Some of the most obvious uses will be with food and landmarks. Imagine this – as you walking down the aisles in Venice, you could take a snap shot of a particular dish you have no idea about and then wait for the results to tell you what that dish is; ditto with landmarks. You don’t need a guide anymore, do you? Click a photo of Taj Mahal or the Leaning Tower of Pisa and you have all the information you need about the monument you are looking at (an Intelligent Camera, anyone?).

It will be interesting to see how it applies to other uses, think of artworks, wine, logo, etc.  Another example of how you can be “in the know” in today’s Google-Smart society.

Right now, Google Goggles can be used only with Android based phones with Android 1.6 and over. With yet another example of how Google creates nifty products and services, Google works relentlessly to maintain competitive advantage.
