Facebook SEO: Ensure Your Facebook Business Page is Found by Search Engines

According to a piece on Mercury news in March, Facebook recently surpassed than Google in the amount of traffic– on a weekly basis in the U.S. That immediately makes me think of how businesses can use this to their advantage? Can a small business benefit from it? Is it possible to tap into the this huge stream of traffic coming off of Facebook?

If you have a business of your own, it would make sense for you to optimize your facebook  page – just like you optimize   optimize your websites, blogs and landing pages. But how do you do it? Is it even possible?

Here are a few things to consider:

Choose a Facebook Business Name with care: The odds are that you already have a business name in use. You might most probably want to use the same name for opening your Facebook business page. You may certainly do so but with a few more inputs – add a few relevant keywords (but take care not to overdo it) in the tag line or in a short descriptive paragraph. This should be done just like you do on-page optimization or your website (like writing appropriate titles with keywords, meta-descriptions, etc).

Sport a Vanity URL and Promote it: Facebook allows you to choose a vanity URL for your business page. So you could pick up something  like  https://www.facebook.com/pathinteractive (which is a Vanity URL for the company, by the way). You could have a Vanity URL for your business too and it really gives your business another place on the Internet which is rather crowded and has more traffic than you know what to do with. Make sure you promote this URL everywhere like your email signatures, online business cards, websites, blogs, etc. Just an fyi, currently you must gain a minimum of 25 fans before you can reserve your vanity url. Use Static FMBL: How about a spiffy landing page to take on tons of traffic? While the traffic can be worked on, most business owners go stiff at the thought of having to make a landing page for their websites – let alone one for Facebook. Use an application like Static FBML to add advanced functionality to your business page. You could even add a box to your Facebook business page into which you can input HTML codes to stretch your customization even further. Follow the Usual Drill: Apart from the fact that it is your facebook Business Page that we are talking about – notwithstanding a few Facebook specific steps, such as those above – everything else you need to do is routine, just as you would work with any other website. For instance, the “about box” on your business page is easily found by the search engines and also provides information to the first time visitor about who your business. Make sure you sprinkle just enough keywords where appropriate and strive to communicate what your business is all about, but don’t compromise on the content geared at providing useful information to your fans/potential fans.
