Digital Week in Review: Apple’s Music Streaming Service, Facebook Likes Dropping, and ISIS Targets Twitter

Leigh Evenson March 6, 2015 Category Social Media

in this week’s Digital Week in Review: Apple’s new music streaming service set to debut in June, Facebook Like counts will be dropping soon, and ISIS targets Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and employees.

Apple’s New Music Streaming Service

Apple MusicJune 8th 2015 is the target launch date for Apple’s new music streaming service. The program will be an overhauled version of Beats with iTunes branding and better integration with Apple’s devices and software. The service will likely debut at WWDC.

Apple aims to bring some Beats-style personalization features but without Beats branding. It will be offered across all platforms including the web and Android. Offering this service to other platforms helps Apple cast a wider net and allows them to complete with platforms like iTunes for windows.

Services are of part of Apple’s business model, which encourage sales of more hardware products to consumers.  Offering things like streaming services or cloud based products also helps Apple reach customers beyond the iOS ecosystem.

Facebook Like Count Will Be Dropping

Facebook Likes

If you run a Facebook page, the count will likely be dropping soon. Facebook will soon be changing the way it counts page “likes” by subtracting any accounts that have been deactivated or “memorialized” after their owner has passed.  However, only  likes from Facebook pages that have been manually deactivated will go away, if a page is inactive just because the users hasn’t been on in a while, those likes will still count. Facebook says this change will happen in the coming weeks.

Note that there should only be a slight dip in likes and should not be blamed on your page’s performance.

ISIS Sends Death Threats To Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey

Twitter’s platform deletes accounts related to terrorist groups, including ISIS. ISIS has written and published a post on JustPaste.it targeting Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and other Twitter employees with death threats for deleting terrorist related Twitter accounts.  The post is written in Arabic and has a picture of Dorsey with cross hairs over his face.  It says that Twitter employees have “become a target for the soldiers of the Caliphate and supporters scattered among your midst!” Twitter has said that “our security team is investigating the veracity of these threats with relevant law enforcement official”.

However it is interesting that Twitter is the only social media company being targeting by ISIS when YouTube and Facebook has also deleted other ISIS related content on their platforms.
