Digital Week in Review: Microsoft Beats Google with Social Search Results

AT&T Puts Ratings and Reviews on Facebook Page; Clickz
AT&T has joined the handful of companies enabling consumers to submit product ratings and reviews through Facebook. The new capability, shared by Microsoft, Adobe, Benefit Cosmetics and a handful of others, is provided through customer feedback specialist Bazaarvoice.
The Takeaway: Ninety-two percent of U.S. Internet users said they read customer product reviews online, and 46 percent said those reviews influence their purchases, according to an eMarketer report from August. Hosting reviews in a venue where fans are the first to review a particular product seems as though it is a further means to guarantee positive reviews. Continue reading

Digital Week in Review: New Facebook Features Exposed

New Facebook Features Exposed; CNN
Facebook accidently went live with a handful of prototype features on Thursday, including a site-wide yet short-lived overhaul of Pages. Facebook admitted to pushing features before their time. However, the features offered an interesting view on where Facebook will be headed in 2011.
The Takeaway: The new “Memories” option will serve as the historical mainframe for Facebook. Curious what you did when and with who? No need to wonder. You will soon have an area where you will be able to track all your personal history online.

Google, Myspace Renew Search Deal; Information Week
Google will continue to power MySpace search and advertising under a long-term deal that reportedly no longer includes the guaranteed payment provisions of the prior contract.
The Takeaway: With Myspace floundering over the past few years, this deal reenergizes the social media site and replaces a greater part of its value on

Gawker Media Hacked, Twitter Accounts Spammed; Forbes
Users of Gawker Media’s Web site have just learned a harsh lesson in in using the same password for different accounts. Spammers have taken over thousands of Twitter accounts after Gawker’s servers were hacked on Sunday, giving cyber attackers access to passwords for 1.3 million passwords.
The Takeaway: The Gawker hack is a lesson to web sites that collect user information and users to might be tempted to have the same passwords across multiple sites. Continue reading

Digital Week in Review: Google Launches Long-Awaited E-Bookstore

Google Launches Long-Awaited E-Bookstore; Mashable
Google has launched its long-awaited e-bookstore, Google E-books, bringing more than 3 million books — many of them free — to any device with a web browser.
The Takeaway: Why is this a big deal? Google’s E-bookstore allows independent booksellers with loyal customer bases to advertise and sell Google e-books via their own venues and take an (as of yet undisclosed) cut of the revenue, an opportunity previously denied to them. Continue reading
